Are you engaged in Mr. Hoffman's math class?
I hope so.
Sometimes
Sometimes students ask: “How is the 4 point math engagement score calculated for me each quarter?”
Good question; as this is something a little different. The engagement score that you receive in math each quarter out of 4 points is not your typical “participation grade” that many teachers have.
It is much more “engaging” than that.
The engagement score
Engagement is the degree of interaction, involvement, and commitment you have to my 6th grade math class. The engagement score of 4 points can be based on any of these 8:
- Participation in class or even through our online math notes program (great for shy kids)
- Asking questions/coming to extra help from their choice (not forced from a parent)
- Sharing connections between our math topic from class and the outside world
- Taking advantage of the 50+ opportunities to go above and beyond, do more math than the min
- Making suggestions to improve our classroom, Hoffkids.com, Classkick with stylus, etc.
- Making up work when absent; being resourceful and proactive
- Doing weekly extra credit/ involved in World Math enrichment
- Clearing their "green hand notifications" on their important Classkick dashboard to see how they did on math work from the past (ask them about this!)
- Reading the Classkick Announcements that Mr. Hoffman posts under "All Yellow 6 Student" in Classkick, sliding the slider to YES, and raising a green hand on that page

Who's It For?
Is it just for kids who like math? Nah. You can dislike math and even Mr. Hoffman (I’ll be sad but will get over it), and still care about learning, improving, and caring to do better.
Yes, it’s is a subjective score, but it is based on 25 years of working with 6th graders in math and my direct professional observations and interactions with your child each and every day in math class.
I hope this answers your question (even if you didn’t have one).
